The 2018 CrossFit Games OPEN at CrossFit Magna

The CrossFit Open is starts next week!

Have you registered?
Did you select CrossFit Magna as your affiliate?
If you need help with the registration process please let us know.

In the meantime, here is what we think you should know...

1) The Open is for everyone, not just competitive athletes. A few years back, CrossFit introduced a scaled division to the CrossFit Open. Participating in the Open allows you to set and achieve goals like getting your first pull-up or lifting a weight for the first time. The Open is also a huge community event. Participating will allow you to create new friendships and grow the relationships you already have. Finally, the Open is fun. There is suspense, highs, lows, and at the end there is this huge sense of accomplishment.

2) We will provide you with a warm-up and strategy. The plan for 2018 is similar to last year. We will watch the announcement show on Thursday night and then run 1 heat of the workout. This will give the coaches a chance to experience the WOD and provide our athletes with better insight on pacing and set-up. We have been through this 7 times and each year we learn a little more. If you have questions, ask us. We want you guys to enjoy this experience as much as possible. If we learn something new during the first week or two this year, we will adjust as we go.

3) We are encouraging athletes to complete the Open Workout on Friday night at 4:30 and 5:30pm and/or Sunday from 9-11am. If you know you don't workout well on Friday nights and can't make it on Sundays, there will also be Open Gym on Saturday from 10am-12pm. THERE WILL BE NO CLASS ON FRIDAY NIGHT AT 4:30 & 5:30PM.

4) During normal class times, Open WODs must be done in the extra work area on the 2nd timer with your own judge. Coaches have a responsibility to their classes. We want you to achieve whatever goals you have set for the Open but with the understanding that not all of our friends and fellow athletes are participating in the Open and still need to train.

5) We encourage you to consider adding in some extra mobility to your weekly routine. Lululemon offers free Sunday yoga classes, which are a great option. You might also consider a subscription to ROMWOD. There is a 7 day free trial and then the monthly plan costs $13.95.

The CrossFit Games Open

LogoAgainFaster

I had the chance to visit with Jon Gilson, the founder of Again Faster, at the 2012 CrossFit Games. I have a lot of respect for Jon and what he has done and continues to do for our sport. The letter below is a great example of Jon's continued leadership and a perfect segway into this year's Open.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jon Gilson on the Open

The CrossFit Open is the World's biggest whiteboard, an opportunity to post a score for everyone to see.

For some, the whiteboard is a contest against self, a record of where we are and where we've been, a log of continuous improvement.  For others, it is mathematical proof positive of victory or defeat, a bid for fitness superiority, a record of battle.

Whether it's you versus you, you versus me, or you versus the World, it's time to sign up and throw down.

I pushed the buttons myself last week, not because I have any hope of winning, but because I know that I can define my own game, my own end.  Fittest on Earth?  Hardly.  I'd settle for fittest on my block.  I'd settle for fitter than last year, fitter than yesterday.

Despite my low bar, I know I'm participating in the largest fitness experiment in history, a global, simultaneous execution of the CrossFit Methodology, the most effective general physical preparation program in history.

Join me, regardless of your end.  Whether you're aiming for the podium, or simply to be a part of something remarkable, push the buttons.

I'll see you at the whiteboard.

Best,

Jon Gilson, Owner
Again Faster

The Next Step: Regionals 2013

The annual CrossFit Games always provide a positive charge to our sport and to aspiring athletes around the world. CrossFit Magna is feeling that energy. I am feeling that energy. I feel it every year but this time my feelings are different. CrossFit Magna is turning into one of the top affiliates in the state of Arizona and in the Southwest Region... the same Southwest Region that produced this year's Affiliate Cup champion and the 2nd place male finisher in this year's CrossFit Games. So how exactly do we take that next step?

Here's the plan:
4-6 WODs each week - we do CrossFit
Goal setting - chase your weaknesses
Nutrition - clean eating, fish oil, multi-vitamins
Training partners - hold each other accountable, elevate each other
Local competitions - Oly Sept 1, SicFit in Oct, Fury, Flagstaff
Olympic lifting specialty coach
Endurance WODs
Training Camps

We will be providing more details on all of these in the coming weeks but for now I want you to know that a storm is coming.....a Magna Purple storm.....and it is going to be EPIC.

Woodstock in Castle Rock?

The 2012 Open is over...

It is time to re-group and think about what we did right this year and what we can do better next year.  There were some amazing performances the last 5 weeks. Whether it was performance under stress or just flat out doing something that you have never done before, each of you overcame obstacles and for that you should be applauded. I am proud of each of our athletes for what they have accomplished the last 5 weeks. Make sure you congratulate the following students the next time you see them:

Alexa Fourlis
Andrea Nestor
Ashley Peck
Chip "The Mayor" Teetsel
Crystal Geer
Dwight Peck
Erica Picard
Jennifer Hallquist
Jessica Woods
Jill Petersen
Manu Robertson
Matt Petersen
Mike Farley
Seth "Call me Shankle" Nieminski
Ted Sweeney
Will Donaldson

Now that the Open is over - LET'S PARTY! The 2012 Southwest Regionals will be in Castle Rock, Colorado May 4-6th. Castle Rock is about 20 miles south of downtown Denver. Coach BK will be competing in the Men's Individual competition for the 3rd straight year. We are still looking at flights and places to stay but the bigger the group the more fun we will have. If enough people are interested we will rent a house so we have a place to cook and drink when the day's Regional events are over. Check out this video and then talk to BK or Katie if you are interested!

2012 CrossFit Open & Schedule Update

This week is your last chance to register for the 2012 CrossFit Open.  You can register here.

Last night, I sat down at the dinner table, took a deep breath and I smiled. It was a big, honest smile. Months of hard work and long hours have gone into getting our Magna athletes ready for the 2012 CrossFit Games Open. Yesterday’s 10 exercise chipper was a test to see if our athletes were ready… the answer to that “if” was written all over my face.

The first workout for the 2012 Open will be released today at 5pm PST. I’m proud to say that 17 of our athletes have registered to compete. Competition and Sport are at the top of the CrossFit pyramid so as an affiliate it is important that we participate in these events. Skip Miller from Front Range CrossFit in Colorado wrote the following statement back in 2011 and I believe that this will always hold true.

“It’s because in a competition, you push yourself further than you are normally willing to go.  The act of competing isn’t important for just the best among us.  It is important for everyone at the gym.  Simply the act of signing up for a race focuses your training and gives you a goal.  Because when we are keeping score, and your score is going up on the Leader Board, it matters. Just by your willingness to put yourself on the line, you are saying something very important about yourself.  It says you are not afraid to face the cold hard truth about your abilities… We want you to compete at something.  At anything you choose to do. We want you to compete because it brings out the greatness in you.”

To accomodate our competitors, we have registered as an affiliate and will be validating scores for the Open WODs at the following times:

THURSDAY 5:30-6:30 pm
FRIDAY 5:00-6:00 pm
SUNDAY 9:30-11:00 am

These time slots will be considered Open Gym so feel free to come work on strength, skills, or do some extra conditioning. All we ask is that you give our competitiors and judges first priority for space and equipment and that you cheer them on as they crush that week's WOD!

DON'T FEAR GREATNESS 2012

Good Luck Magna Athletes

We would like to wish all of our Magna athletes good luck tomorrow!  If you are not competing please try to make it to Lift It/ Love It to cheer on your fellow athletes.  Competition will begin promptly at 8am.  Alexa and Ilana will be in heat 2, Jenn competes in heat 3 and Will makes his appearance in heat 6.

The 11th Skill

CrossFit Magna athletes will be wearing "11th Skill" shirts at Lift It/Love It on Saturday in honor of our friend Lauriel Luther. CrossFit is based on the development of 10 skills (see "What is Fitness" ).  Lauriel always says that the the 11th skill is just as important as CrossFit's recognized 10.  The 11th skill is looking good while CrossFitting.  Lauriel Luther without question sets the standard for the 11th skill. In honor of her we will be working to achieve Lauriel's level of greatness in style on Saturday.

2011.08.06 - 2k Row Challenge FINALS

WOD - 2k row

Today was a great day at CrossFit Magna. After 4 weeks of rowing, our athletes had the opportunity to re-test their max effort 2k rows. Just like the athletes at the CrossFit Games, our athletes showed up and competed with the hearts of champions. There was coffee, paleo muffins, lots of sweat, more than a few PR's, and in the end 2 winners. Congratulations to Will "the Crazy Canadian" Donaldson and Maria "follow me to the leaderboard" Peck. Winners received $20 gift cards to Whole Foods. All atheletes earned something more valuable - PRIDE.

Rowing Challenge: Official Rules

CrossFit Magna's July Challenge is officially underway. Thank you for all who participated in Saturday morning's opening ceremony. The deadline to row your baseline 2k time has been extended to 7:30pm Tuesday night. As a reminder, this is a free challenge for all of our students so you've got nothing to lose. Call or email us to set up a time.

After much deliberation, we have settled on what we believe to be a fair scoring system. All participants will be scored as follows:

  • Rank on Baseline Row: 30%
  • Rank on Final Row: 30%
  • Rank on Percentage improvement: 40%

We will be giving a prize to the top male and female based on the scoring system above. Good luck to everyone!

Push Up Challenge!

Someone smart once told me that CrossFit comes down to 3 basic movements - the push-up, the pull-up and the squat. With that in mind, we thought the push-up would be the perfect exercise for our very first Magna Challenge.

The officially unofficial official rules are as follows!
Students will be tested on the improvement of their 1 set max effort and 3 set max effort the week of June 13. For example, if you tested in class on Monday and your scores were 50, 40, and 30 your baseline numbers would be 50 for 1 set max effort and 120 (50+40+30) for 3 set max effort. If you have not been tested by a coach, you have until the end of class on Saturday to make arrangements to be tested! This is a FREE competition with actual prizes so you have nothing to lose!

We will work push-ups into most of our classes during the next 3 weeks. You should also work on your strength at home. If you are looking for ideas of how to build this into your daily routine talk to a coach the next time you are in for class.

Winners will be determined at our BBQ on Saturday July 2nd! 3,2,1, GO....

Magna invades Cactus CrossFit - SATURDAY 9am

Magna invades Cactus CrossFit

Katie and I will be in Denver for the SW CrossFit Games Regional this weekend. With that being said, it is never too early to start thinking about and planning for next year's Regionals. My goal for next year's Games is to qualify a team for Regionals. So let's start training together now!

Our friends at Cactus CrossFit have challenged us to a friendly throwdown on Saturday at 9:00 am. It will be a team wod, teams of 3, and the hope is to divide up with multiple Cactus and Magna teams.  It’ll be a free day, so go enjoy some friendly competition, and meet some fellow CrossFitters!

Class is at 9am. We have no doubt you'll make us proud!

Crystal Geer at Saturday Nitro

CG_at_EVCF_Nitro

Congratulations to our very own Crystal Geer for a job well done at East Valley CrossFit's Saturday Nitro! This was a 3 part even consisting of 1 rep max Snatch, 1 rep max Clean & Jerk, and 1 rep max Deadlift. As usual, a huge thank you to the guys from Full Squared Productions for capturing all of the action. More pictures can be found on Full Squared's website and in our Competitions photo album.
